Pocahontas Schools Implement New Cell Phone Storage with Signal-Blocking Storage Bags

To foster a more focused and productive learning environment, the Pocahontas School District is proud to

announce the rollout of a new practice regarding cell phone possession for students in grades 6 through 12. This

initiative, developed in response to valuable feedback from parents, students, and educators, introduces the use of

innovative storage bags that block all incoming and outgoing electromagnetic signals (EMF). The policy will go

into effect upon delivery of the bags to the district in early January 2025.

A Commitment to Enhanced Learning

In accordance with existing policy, students will now be required to store their cell phones in the provided signalblocking

storage bags during instructional time. These bags, sealed with velcro, provide a barrier to access while

ensuring that phones remain accessible in the event of an emergency. The intentional design choice ensures

practicality and safety, unlike some other storage options that utilize locking mechanisms. Phones will remain

securely stored until the end of class.

“This change represents our commitment to creating classrooms that prioritize learning and minimize

disruptions,” said Dr. Lance Arbuckle, Superintendent of Pocahontas School District. “By removing the

temptation of notifications and social media during class, we’re empowering students to be more present and

involved in their education.”

Flexibility During Non-Instructional Times

Recognizing the importance of maintaining connectivity and honoring student feedback, the new practice includes

access to cell phones during lunch and between classes. This adjustment marks a significant change from the

previous policy and reflects the district’s responsiveness to students’ needs and perspectives.

“We understand that cell phones are an essential tool for communication and connection,” said Christian Helms,

Principal of Pocahontas High School. “By allowing access during non-instructional times, we’re striking a

balance that respects both the academic environment and students’ desire for connectivity.”

Grades Impacted

The updated policy applies to all students in grades 6 through 12 across the district. Teachers will oversee the use

of the storage bags in their classrooms to ensure a seamless integration of the new procedures.

Looking Ahead

The Pocahontas School District believes the evolution of the current policy will foster a culture of respect, focus,

and engagement in the classroom. “We’re excited to see the positive impact this initiative will have on both

teaching and learning,” added Arbuckle.
